The municipality of Reggello includes an extensive area running from the ridge
of Pratomagno to the river Arno. The town and other smaller hamlets developed on
a plateau formed by the debris of a prehistoric lake that once covered the upper
Arno valley. North of this plateau are terraced fields with olive groves and,
higher in altitude, woods and pastures. South of it are ledges ending up in the
Arno valley, a flat land cut by the river, highways and railroads.
Reggello is a town which preserves a very nice historical centre and, not too
far away, the remarkable Pieve di
S. Piero a Cascia (a ‘pieve’ is an old rural church
The other points of interest of the area are the
Forest of Vallombrosa,
stretching out around the millennial
Abbey and the resort named
Saltino which boasts over one century of tourist tradition.
The extensive olive tree plantations and the century old tradition make Reggello
the town of the extra virgin olive oil. Other communities are:
-
Tosi, a mountain hamlet full
of artisan workshops
producing wooden items;
-
Donnini, located in a
panoramic site and the near Pieve a Pitiana;
-
S. Donato a Fronzano and Cancelli,
facing the Arno valley like blossomed olive trees;
-
Leccio, dominated by the
moresque Castle of Sammezzano and home to several
fashion outlets;
-
S. Clemente, i Ciliegi, Prulli,
Montanino, Vaggio and Matassino, set halfway between the valley floor and the
first gentle hills.
