The municipality of Pelago spreads out over the hills between the valleys of the
rivers Sieve and Arno. The main village boasts an interesting historical centre,
developed around a medieval fortress. Here, the
Museum of Sacred Art is set up
in the ancient church of S. Clemente.
Another major community within this municipality is San Francesco. As a matter
of fact, San Francesco is small suburb of Pontassieve, which lies on the
opposite bank of the river Sieve and is linked to San Francesco by an old
historical bridge.
The other communities are:
-
Diacceto, along the scenic
route to the pass of the Consuma: in the vicinity are the castle and the Villa
di Nipozzano. The hamlets of Ferrano and Ristonchi, clinching to the mountain
sides, are easily reached from here;
-
Palaie, on the hill above San
Francesco;
-
Carbonile, along the road
leading to Valdarno;
-
Paterno, which developed
around a farm run by the monks of the Abbey of Vallombrosa, from where it is
easy to reach the quaint hamlet of Pagiano and Villa di Melosa;
-
Raggioli, a typical mountain
village, seat of a small
Ethnographic Museum;
-
Borselli, with its nearby
church of Tosina, a holiday resort at the gateway to the valley of Pomino
(Rufina);
-
The Pass of the Consuma,
another holiday resort at about 1000 m above sea-level, at the gateway to the
valley of the Casentino (Province of Arezzo), with its “pievi” (rural churches),
castles and characteristic villages;
-
Fontisterni, a quaint village,
tucked away in the countryside, yet at a stone’s throw from the railway
station of Santellero.
