Itineraries: pievi, castles and villas around Reggello |
|
 |
|
We suggest a circuit taking in several monuments, with remarkable
historical and architectural features.
Starting point
We describe this circuit starting from Leccio, on the floor of the valley.
This village is nowadays famous thanks to the several fashion
outlets which
recently have mushroomed up in the surrounding area.
On the hill above
Leccio stands the castle of Sammezzano, a large and curious residence in
Moresque style, located in the middle of a nice park with age-old trees.

Proceding towards Reggello
After the visit to the castle, retrace back to Leccio and take the uphill
road to Reggello, with ample views on the steep cliffs that border the
plateau covered with olive groves. The road passes through the hamlet of
Cancelli first and eventually reaches Reggello (visit the old porticoed
main square: Piazza Potente)

|
Cascia: the pieve and the
museum
Without leaving the built-up area of Reggello, just a few hundred meters
downstream, stands the Romanesque
Pieve of S.
Pietro a Cascia, with a characteristic portico: the visit is a must,
not just for the architectural features but for the masterpiece hanging in
it: the
Triptych painted by the young Masaccio.
Behind the church is the
Museumo of Sacred Art.
A short detour from the main circuit leads to Villa di Mandri, a building
of the 16th-17th century located in a beautiful position, on the foot of
the itinerary named “Strada dei Sette
Ponti”.

Back to the middle ages
Retrace back to the pieve at Cascia, where a downhill road towards
Montanino, takes you to the foot of the cliffs, next to the A1 motorway
near the exit of Incisa.
Here, just past the exit, where the river Arno is very narrow, stands a
tower (Torre Bandinella), just opposite the castle of Incisa, now in ruins.
The final section of this circuit is along the winding national road nr 69
(SS 69), nortwards: the imposing mass of the tower named “Torre del
Castellano” (reachable via an easy detour to the right) dominates the
several hairpin bends.
After a quick visit to the tower, proceed downhill northwards to reach the
starting point. On the opposite bank of the river, you can see in the
distance the tower named “Torre dell’Isola”, standing in the community of
Rignano sull’Arno.
