Art itineraries: The valley of St Godenzo |
|
 |
|
This brief itinerary allows you to visit the most meaningful places of
the northern section of our territory to Castagno d'Andrea.
Starting point
The itinerary starts at Dicomano
|
|
Along the stream Comano
After leaving the neoclassical building of St. Onofrio behind you, take
the national road nr 67 (SS 67) and head towards San Bavello. Here,
besides the rural church, it is worth mentioning a still operating water
mill. The road continues uphill, never turning too steep, to eventually
reach the village of San Godenzo.
|
|
S. Godenzo
The historical centre is definitely worth a visit, for both the cosy old
village and the imposing
Abbey of S. Godenzo in Alpe, a remarkable religious building in
Romanesque style.

|
Castagno d'Andrea
Back to the entrance of the village of S. Godenzo, take the - somewhat
steeper - road to Castagno, with good views into the surrounding valleys.
Not much remains of the original village of Castagno, because of wars,
destructions and landslides. Two are the buildings worth visiting:
- the church of S. Martino, a simple, austere building that would not be
worth mentioning if not for some interesting frescos by Pietro Annigoni
and his pupil Silvestro Pistolesi.
- The Visitor Centre
of the National Park (Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi, Monte
Falterona e Campigna) and, on the floor above
- The Andrea del
Castagno Virtual Museum, displaying copies of the major
works of this painter of the Renaissance.
