The area of the Montagna Fiorentina
boasts a history stretching back many centuries and has left evident
archaeological traces..
The vicinity of the Etruscan town of FIESOLE and, later, of FLORENTIA (Florence)
has left its mark on urban organization, burials, roads, memorial stones and,
most of all, toponymy of many places.
Today, the vast majority of the archaeological artefacts are exhibited in the
museums of Florence and Fiesole (we strongly recommend visiting them).
Over the last years, a growing interest
in Medieval archaeology has developed, with specific attention to Medieval
abandoned castles. During the summer, there are excavations led by people from
the following universities:

<- Among the most interesting finds in
our area, we mention a set of Etruscan memorial stones, like this one discovered
at Travignoli (near Pelago) and exhibited at the
Archaeological Museum at Fiesole.
The visit to the museum allows you discover the charm of Fiesole during the
Roman Era, with its theatre, temples and many public buildings.
For those really fond of archaeology we
recommend paying a visit to the
Archaeological Museum in Florence, with its important Egyptian and Etruscan
collections.
In Arezzo, the archaeological museum “Gaio Cilnio Mecenate” well deserves a
visit for its collection of Roman pottery and for the building in which it is
housed: a monastery built upon the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre..
