The circuit is about 67 km long and takes in two mountain passes: Croce a
Mori (995 m) and Consuma (1060 m), and it is suitable for the lovers of
fatiguing uphill and long downhill rides.
Starting point
There are several feasible starting points for this circuit: we will
describe it starting from Contea (Dicomano); other starting points such as
Londa, Castiglioni, Pomino, Borselli or Consuma allow the rider to enjoy
long downhill roads from the very beginning.

|
At Croce a
Mori
From Contea, the first two kilometres are flat and represent a
good warming up. The road uphill begins at Londa, but it is never too
steep all the way to the col. From here, the descent towards the
Casentino, the name of the first valley the river Arno runs through.
|
|
The Casentino
The descent is pleasant, among woods and pastures. Following
the first reaches of the river Arno, you soon get to the village of Stia,
where the visit to the historical centre is a must. Here, before the
second fatiguing stage of the ride, a snack is recommended.
|
|
Towards the pass of Consuma
The road now climbs towards the pass of Consuma, passing by the
castle of Romena (short detour recommended). At Scarpaccia, get onto the
national road nr 70 (SS 70), which takes you all the way to the pass of
Consuma through grassland and pastures. The ascent is pretty hard and
sunny, being not recommended during the hottest days of the summer. Anyway,
the sight of the conifer forests surrounding the pass implies that the
goal is getting nearer and nearer.
|
|
In the valley of Pomino
Take your breath and continue, downhill, along the same
national road all the way to the village of Borselli, where you turn right
towards Pomino. The road, which continues downhill, goes by the church of
S. Margherita at Tosina, from where the view is really suggestive. After
passing a mill at Mentone and a short uphill stretch, the road lazily
snakes its way downhill towards Pomino, among beautiful vineyards.
At Pomino the local Romanesque church is worth a visit.
The descents continues steeper and steeper, passing by another remarkable
church at Castiglioni. A few more kilometres downhill and you get onto the
national road nr 67 (SS 67) which quickly leads back to the staring point.

This itinerary is suitable for
fit cyclists (long uphill
stretches of road).
Take along with you a
windbreaker, as several descents
start from upland places, with
likely sudden changes of
temperature. Fewer than 70
kilometres, but hard ! |
