Chianti Rufina and Pomino Wine Route
4.
Tour of the major farms
We describe this tour with Rufina as a
starting point, but being this a circuit,
you can also start from either Pontassieve
or Pelago.
From Rufina, head north to meet, after about
two kilometres, the intersection to Pomino.
The narrower road now quickly climbs up
among olive groves and wine yards, to reach
“Fattoria dei Busini”, from where a detour
leads to the “Oratorio di Rugiano”, a rare
example of Baroque style, unfortunately in
very bad shape. Keep driving uphill to find
the medieval Pieve di S. Stefano of
Castiglioni, a remarkable Romanesque
building overlooking the valley from a
dominant position. Below, on a cliff, the
castle of Castiglioni, a feudal estate
belonging to the Bishops of Fiesole.
You then enter the valley of the stream
Rufina, taking in Petrognano first and
Pomino later, where is a remarkable
Romanesque church. Pomino has become one of
the symbols of the ‘wine civilization’ and
the valley surely owns its prosperity to
this product but, also, suffered deep
environmental and landscape changes because
of the intensive vine growing.
Proceed uphill along the same road to meet
the church of Tosina, where a valuable
triptych is preserved, and the junction with
the National Road from the Pass of the
Consuma. Take it and leave it soon following
for Nipozzano, an enchanted hamlet not to
miss at all (we recommend to plan your trip
so as to be here at sunset).
Back on the National Road follow it for less
than one kilometre and head towards Pelago,
passing through the farm of Travignoli. The
village of Pelago has a quite nice
historical centre, with signs of the ancient
castle.
