Fruits
The Montagna Fiorentina has never been known
for producing large volumes of fruit, but it
is known for some extremely distinctive
kinds. Peaches are the best-known fruits of
the region, though there were also local
varieties of apples and pears that have been
abandoned. Dried fruit, for example
chestnuts, are on the other hand quite
important.
PEACHES OF LONDA
Peach growing has resumed in the sunnier
mid-level hillsides of Dicomano and Londa.
Thanks to the efforts of the growers of the
Comunità Montana, a type of cultivation that
was on the verge of being abandoned has been
preserved, and more recently the peaches
have been become a Slow Food Presidium,
which will help support and promote them.
The Regina di Londa peach cultivar, which
was identified by chance in the town of
Londa in 1953, produces peaches that ripen
late in the season; they're large-sized,
white-fleshed and firm, and quite tasty:
Celebrated peaches that can be tasted and
purchased from the growers of the region.
In September, during the Sagra di Londa, the
"Pesca d'Argento" prize is awarded for the
best peach of the season.
There is also the Guglielmina Peach, a peach
of unknown parentage that was first noted in
1971.
