CHIANTI
COLLI FIORENTINI
The Chianti Colli Fiorentini subzone has
been recognized since the Chianti production
zone was first defined in 1932. It extends
over an area of gently rolling hills that
has always been known for the production of
fine wines, and includes parts of eighteen
Communes, including several of the Montagna
Fiorentina: Pelago, Pontassieve, and
Reggello.
The rules governing the production of
Chianti Colli Fiorentini are more
restrictive than those governing the Chianti
denomination. The yield per hectare cannot
exceed 56 hectoliters of wine and more
bottle age is required before the wine is
released: this serves to help the wine
capture the characteristics of the region
from which it hales.
The Consorzio Chianti Colli Fiorentini was
formed by a group of winemakers who banded
together to further both the region and the
wine by improving production methods and
publicizing the region's name and reputation.
The bottles of the wineries belonging to the
Consorzio bear a seal that combines the lion
of the bell tower of Florence's Palazzo
Vecchio with the goblet of the Chianti Colli
Fiorentini.
