The old mills |
|
In our countryside, in addition to hundreds of old rural houses, you can still
find the remains of dozens of watermills, most which have been built since the
12th century.
|
During your walks in the countryside, it will not be
unusual to run into some old buildings along small
courses of water: very likely old watermills, today
often converted into modern houses. |
The most imposing mills were built by the big local
landowners, either nobles or religious congregations,
who could invest the large amounts of money needed for
these complex systems: a dam, a long channel and the
mill itself.
The coat of arms displayed next to these lines, used to
be embedded in one of the mills belonging to the
millenary abbey of Vallombrosa. |
|
Among the numerous mills that once populated our
countryside, just a very few are still operating
nowadays and they can be considered as true museums.
